Knight International Fellows work with partner organizations on high-impact projects to build skills and enhance the standards of independent media in these key regions: Asia/Pacific, Eurasia/Former Soviet Union, Latin America, Middle East/North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Candidates must be fluent in the language of the region where they are deployed and should have at least 10 years' experience in journalism or related fields such as media-business management. Fellowships are open to any nationality for assignments of up to a year.
The program may create Fellowships designed to take advantage of the skills of qualified applicants or to respond to specific local needs identified by the Fellowship candidate or local partner. Candidates are encouraged to list geographic preferences on their applications.

The Knight International Journalism Awards
The Awards recognize international journalists who demonstrate an extraordinary devotion to the craft by upholding the highest journalistic standards despite overwhelming challenges.
Last year’s winners, Burmese investigative journalist May Thingyan Hein and Egyptian citizen journalist Wael Abbas, were selected for their remarkable contributions to media independence in the face of government crackdowns and risks to their personal safety. Abbas, the first blogger to win the Knight International Journalism Award, was later named 2007 Middle East Person of the Year by CNN.
Hein and Abbas are among 24 Knight International Journalism Award recipients selected for their commitment to high-quality journalism. Award winners receive a trip to the United States and a $1,000 cash prize, which will be presented at ICFJ’s Annual Awards Dinner in November.
