Our Program

Our Fellows: Journalism Trainers for Media in Transition

The Knight International Journalism Fellowships program, funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation since 1993, has trained more than 30,000 journalists, media managers and journalism students in 80 countries.

"We carefully assessed countries where the opportunities for change were greatest," said ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan. "Then, in collaboration with local partners and other experts on the ground, we came up with projects that we believe will bring journalism to a new level and have a lasting impact for the public good."

The Knight International Journalism Fellowships program pairs global media professionals with partner media organizations in key countries where there are opportunities for meaningful and measurable change.

The Knight International Journalism Awards

The Awards recognize international journalists who demonstrate an extraordinary devotion to the craft by upholding the highest journalistic standards despite overwhelming challenges.

Last year’s winners, Burmese investigative journalist May Thingyan Hein and Egyptian citizen journalist Wael Abbas, were selected for their remarkable contributions to media independence in the face of government crackdowns and risks to their personal safety. Abbas, the first blogger to win the Knight International Journalism Award, was later named 2007 Middle East Person of the Year by CNN.

Hein and Abbas are among 24 Knight International Journalism Award recipients selected for their commitment to high-quality journalism. Award winners receive a trip to the United States and a $1,000 cash prize, which will be presented at ICFJ’s Annual Awards Dinner in November.
