The 2009 winners, Cao Junwu of China and Chouchou Namegabe Nabintu of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, were selected for their ability to tell important stories that others have shied away from despite the risks. Recipients of the Knight International Journalism Award epitomize the journalistic ideals fostered by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the International Center for Journalists.
John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s José Carlos Zamora announced the winners at a reception on June 23 at the Newseum in Washington, DC. Zamora’s father, José Rubén Zamora, received the award in 2003 for his work as the publisher of Guatemala’s El Periódico. Click here to view his touching speech on why this award means so much to his family and to international journalists worldwide.
Winners are nominated by Knight International Journalism Fellows, past and present, and other seasoned international journalists. The 2009 jury included one former Knight Fellow—Susan Friedman, a former NBC correspondent. American University School of Communication Distinguished Journalist in Residence Nick Clooney, The Wall Street Journal Deputy Managing Editor International Nikhil Deogun, POLITICO Deputy Managing Editor Erika Pontarelli Compart, NBC News Washington Bureau Chief Mark Whitaker, Washington Hispanic President Johnny Yataco, and ICFJ President Joyce Barnathan also served on the jury.
This year will mark the 12th anniversary of the Knight International Journalism Awards, given by the Knight International Journalism Fellowships program. The Fellowships are designed to create lasting, tangible improvements in the way journalism is practiced around the world. The program is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.
