Project Goal: To develop a Virtual Newsroom, an online place where Arabic-speaking journalists work together to produce balanced and accurate news in a country where media are operating under growing restraints. The Knight International Journalism Fellow will bring the journalists together at the American University in Cairo, where they will work on story ideas and techniques. The Fellow, assisted by a team of other media-development experts, will supervise teams of journalists working in the Virtual Newsroom.

Biography: Roderick Craig, a U.K. citizen, has written for nearly all the British national newspapers, including the Times, Daily Telegraph, Guardian and Financial Times. He was managing editor and deputy publisher of the Middle East Times in Cairo, worked in Yemen, Kuwait, Lebanon and Algeria, and reported on the region for the Washington Times. Most recently, Craig was country director of AINA, a media non-governmental organization in Afghanistan, where he trained journalists, photographers, radio, and video staff. Craig founded several weekly newspapers in Great Britain and France, where he has had a permanent home for 30 years.
