Knight Fellow Chris Conte has pumped new life into an association of health journalists and built a corps of professionals devoted to covering health-related issues. He also has worked with Uganda’s largest newspapers to help reporters and editors produce more and better stories focusing on the latest measures to treat HIV/AIDS and other crippling diseases such as malaria, and drug abuse.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Revived the Uganda Health Communication Alliance (UHCA), now a source for professional development for health journalists. Gained U.S. Embassy financial support for UHCA's work.
- Created the Uganda Health Reporter, a newsletter produced by UHCA members that provides information about new workshops and reports from health experts.
- Helped guide reporting that led the government of Uganda to seek a $100 million World Bank loan, which is expected to win approval later this year.
- Guided reporters in developing sources on stories that led to an unprecedent polio vaccination campaign, the most successful in recent Ugandan history.
UPCOMING WORK
- Coach journalists at the Daily Monitor newspaper to increase coverage of health policy issues in advance of Uganda's March 2011 national elections.
- Help the Uganda Radio Network to strengthen its health reporting, establish a program to provide expert speakers for its radio talk show partners, and find sustainable funding.
- Develop a permanent mentoring program for health and other journalists.
